Staycay at Como the Treasury
When Western Australia opens up for travel and staycation, a lot of people jump into the opportunity to experience the holiday vibe and discover WA's backyard. One of the first few hotels that came to mind was Como the Treasury, located alongside Cathedral Square.
Back in 2016, Como the Treasury was awarded #1 Best Hotel in Australia and New Zealand with a near-perfect score of 99.11 at the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler's Readers Choice Awards 2016. In 2020, New York-based tourism magazine Travel + Leisure's named it the Best City Hotel in Australia and New Zealand among other awards.
💁 Here's a more in-depth look into our weekend staycay at Como the Treasury.
🚗 Como Valet Parking
Parking was a breeze, we drove in from St George's Trc entrance, parked our car in front of the hotel, and passed on the key to the valet staff. The price for valet parking is reasonable at $25 (4 hours) to $50 for the full day. During our check-in, the staff informed us that the whole State Building is licenced. Meaning you can bring a glass of wine everywhere you go as long as it's within the building. Fun!
Como the Treasury Room 🛌
The room at Como the Treasury is spacious, starting from 55 sqm, all the way to 120 sqm for its Como Suite. We stayed in the Heritage Room, a massive 60 sqm room with a view of Cathedral Square. This room has oversized windows that bring in a lot of natural lights during the day.
Everything in the in-room private-bar is complimentary 🥂, and then it will be re-stocked daily. Along with it, there are also complimentary coffee and tea.
I love that they have a heated floor system for the bathroom area. Often found in Asian countries, it was such a luxury to see it in Australia! The bathroom 🚿 has Como Shambhala amenities, and the smell of the body lotion was so reinvigorating! 😍 I’m still using it until now (hahaha). The bathtub works a treat 🛀, and there’s always a container full of salt next to it. In the same area, you can find the built-in wardrobe, luggage rack, and comfortable plush robes.
There’s a turn-down service every afternoon, which I looked forward to because of the cute treat that we found on the bed. The first night, it was a copy of a story written by a State Building staff on the day Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. The second night, we got a box of chocolate from Sue Lewis!
💐 Wildflower Restaurant
We kept on changing the number of people in our booking at Wildflower, and I was grateful for the help of the staff at the hotel. In the end, it was a dinner for a group of 4. Initially, we chose the 4-course tasting menu ($135), but we changed it to 6-course ($165).
I remembered having a great experience at Wildflower when it first opened, so I was super keen to dig into all the dish. I need to mention that the cocktail list is impressive because each cocktail incorporates native Australia botanicals in it. I liked the Sandalwood Espresso out of the three cocktails that we ordered. The list of non-alcoholic drink seems promising as well.
As for food, Head Chef designed a menu that made us wanting more. Each plate has a stunning presentation. Check out some of our dishes below. Wildflower also caters for Vegetarian, and each of the vegetarian plates came out as beautiful too!
Como Post Breakfast 🍴
So on the second day of our stay, we went down to the Post. Breakfast comes with a choice of pastries, main, juice, coffee, and cut up fruits. I was feeling so spoilt!
On the day of our check out though, SF arranged for the breakfast to be set up in the room. It was such a nice treat, plus we were sore from the gym as well 🥺, sore because we haven’t had a good workout in a while 🤣. Tips: just call the staff and ask for breakfast to be set up in the room.
🍸 🍹 Poole’s Temple
COVID-19 creates an opportunity for businesses to re-brand, so the Halford Bar transformed itself into Pooles Temple, a late night live-jazz bar 🎷 🎺. The name Pooles Temple is inspired by George Thomas Temple-Poole. It was cool to see some familiar faces working at the bar and floor of this venue. If you stay at Como, there’s a secret access that makes Pooles Temple almost a speakeasy bar.
SF and I were looking for the pool area, but then we found a black card reader in front of a door. Not knowing where it led to, we tapped the key card to the reader, and voila, we stared into faces of surprised customers. We didn’t expect the door to lead there. Also, we didn’t notice the one-flight-down logo of Pooles Temple next to the reader too…
Como Shambhala 💆🏻 💆🏻♂️
The experience at Como wouldn’t be complete without trying the famous Como Shambhala Urban Escape. We opted for the signature COMO Shambhala Massage (90 minutes). It was such a relaxing massage that I fell asleep immediately. You can access the full wellness menu here. There are four treatment rooms, but only one room with a double bed. If you want to go for a couple massage, you should book the date in advance.
Gym and pool are located on a different floor to the spa, but it is part of the wellness facilities of the hotel. The swimming pool opens until late, and you need the staff to help you access the area after 9 PM. All equipment at the gym is supplied by Technogym, which targeted the area that you want to improve. It’s funny that I couldn’t stop looking at McDonald’s Barrack Street during my workout 🤦♀️ 🤷.
The State Building housed a few of cool retailers, such as Fox & Rabbit florist, Rohan Jewellers, Teassentials, The Honeycake Shop, and Sue Lewis. On a weekday, you can find Telegram Coffee inside the building as well. Don’t forget to check them out!
We had a wonderful experience at Como the Treasury. It is definitely above the rank, and no wonder they received an award for the best city hotel.
It is within walking distance to the shopping centres and Perth CBD. It has multiple restaurants, and even a dedicated beer and wine bar. Guests will have different choices for meals during the stay - don’t forget to book early!
We hope this can help you to decide where to stay, and enjoy your staycation!
